In this article, we will look at the topic of men and skincare. To some this is an uncomfortable topic to discuss, but I believe that we need to educate people and make them aware of some facts.
The majority believe that skincare is a female thing and that men do not necessarily need to take care of their facial skin.
But let me break this for you; this myth is far from being real and in this blog, we will explore why men need to build and develop a skincare regime just like us women.
Do men need to take care of their facial skin?
According to experts, a man’s facial skin is generally more resilient and elastic than a woman’s one, since they have a stronger ‘muscular ‘protective layer (particularly because of the facial hair).
This usually makes their skin more firm and thicker which also means that the signs of ageing appear much later.
Because of it, many have the assumption and belief that men do not necessarily need to follow a skincare regime.
Guys let me tell you something, this is far from being true. It does not justify nor validate the fact that men should not be taking care of their skin.
Experts stated that although there’s a difference between the skin of males and females (which we will briefly talk about later), skincare for men is as relevant as it is for women, and they need to take care of their faces.
At the end of the day, skin is skin. It is a living tissue which means that it is vulnerable to harmful effects of dietary habits, pollution, and of course time.
Skincare products have an incredible and real impact on someone’s skin no matter their gender. They help protect the skin, have active and nutrient ingredients, vitamins, and most importantly they help boost blood circulation.
Experts confirm that it is fundamental for men to take care of their facial skin to make it look healthy and at its finest.
The health of the skin is a concern that men must consider.
And just like women, the lack of facial care on your skin means that you will be more likely to face harsh premature ageing.
Society puts pressure on women to look and appear a certain way, and a woman’s skin is usually viewed and judged more than a man’s.
And this unfortunately is misguiding many people especially guys.
Let’s now explore some of the differences in men’s skin compared to a female that will make you think twice about the importance of skincare for guys too.
What are the main differences between male and female facial skin?
So, men’s skin is different primarily due to the presence of facial hair.
Thus considering that men’s facial hair contributes to a stronger layer of skin, signs of ageing appear later for them.
However, we need to know that when they do, they usually occur much faster and more frequently. It is therefore important to take early precautions and not wait for your facial skin to start ageing.
Hydrating and nourishing the skin daily will reduce the appearance of men ageing when it hits them.

Men also tend to have wider pores than women. This means that the skin tends to be shinier and oilier, and they are more prone to the effects of free radicals and excess oils. These are the main contributory factors to wrinkles, dark spots, and fine lines.

Finally, because guys need to shave their beards now and then, it has been proven that shaving regularly stresses the skin. Every shave removes the upper layer of skin cells which exposes immature skin that is usually sensitive to external issues.
Should men develop a skincare regime?
Yes, and if you are reading this, my brothers (or even girls who are interested in learning more about this) then this should be a wake-up call to you.
And if you are not doing so you should start thinking about developing a skincare regime now.
When it comes to skincare, it is also important for men to recognise and know what type of skin condition they have.
They should be able to choose the right products for their skin condition that are designed with specific factors.
Tips for consistent skincare
It doesn’t have to be complicated and just like us men that do suffer from dry sensitive skin should be aware of these simple steps.
**********************
First, it is important to cleanse their face twice a day to remove impurities from the skin.
Followed by a moisturiser
(to keep the skin soft and hydrated) and by using it regularly, you will get rid of fine lines and wrinkles which are the influential factors in making the skin appear older.
And SPF to protect the skin against UV radiation. And for men, an SPF with a broad spectrum of 30 is a great option just like us women. It should be reapplied throughout the day to intensify its effects.

Besides, since most men do not put makeup on, a moisturiser with SPF is a really good idea.
Unlike women, men can easily embrace low-maintenance routines and the key here is consistency and sticking to the regime.
Should men with dry sensitive skin use the same product as women?
Experts say that while using skincare products designed for women does not harm a man’s skin, it is sometimes not necessary.
Males with dry sensitive skin should use skincare products carefully and attentively. Luckily most skincare products for dry sensitive skin are suitable for both genders. Just make sure to look out for the key ingredients in fighting the condition.

**(Although it might seem that I’m addressing women more than guys, all the products listed can be used by men too).
To conclude, men need to have a skincare regime and follow it strictly.
Dermatologists and experts want men to know that skincare matters for them too and it is not just a woman thing.
Men need to take care of their facial skin as much as a woman would.
And no matter your gender, ethnicity, or age, everyone can benefit from developing a skincare routine for the skin.
That is all guys and if you have a question drop it down below.
