Does liquid chlorophyll clear skin?

The best-known content on TikTok relates to skincare, which ranks among some of the platform’s most popular topics.

Well, guys, as you may know, liquid chlorophyll – a green substance found in plants that are used for photosynthesis – is the latest viral trend to hit the app, which aims to clear up acne and reduce redness by adding it to water.

You may ask, does liquid chlorophyll clear the skin? Could it be the best solution? If not, what are the alternatives? Okay, you get the picture. You certainly have many questions and wonder if you should give it a try or not. Before considering it, read this article to get a better idea of whether you should buy it or not. Let’s analyse it together. 🙂

Is liquid chlorophyll proven to work on your skin?

TikTok users say you can reduce acne and redness on your skin by drinking liquid chlorophyll in your water.

However, @dermdoctor Muneeb Shah (one of my favourite dermatologists that is very popular online, particularly on TikTok), claimed that liquid chlorophyll does not appear to help clear skin.

A few small studies have shown topical chlorophyllin, a chlorophyll derivative applied to the skin, can reduce redness. Shah, however, said that there is no evidence that liquid chlorophyll does the same.

According to Shah, the benefits of drinking liquid chlorophyll are minimal and some of the claims made by TikTok are false. Additionally, he recommended acne-clearing product use and diet changes to aid in skin healing.

Also, if you want to reduce acne, Shah recommends starting with four ingredients: retinoids to reduce ageing and acne, benzoyl peroxide to fight acne-causing bacteria, and salicylic acid to remove dirt, and azelaic acid to reduce inflammation and redness.

Is it safe to use?

According to Shan, despite its lack of proven effect on acne or redness, liquid chlorophyll may have some benefits due to its anti-inflammatory properties.

Chlorophyll liquid is generally regarded as a harmless beauty trend, and there is no clear evidence that it can cause health issues. However, the results may not be as you expect.

Honestly, I was tempted to buy one, but after researching online, I decided not to.

Obviously, I can’t decide if you should use it or not, but if you do, make sure that you do it with caution and don’t consume too much.

Some people who consume too much liquid chlorophyll may develop a blistering rash known as pseudoporphyria when subjected to sunlight. The risk is low, but still possible, Shah said.

What’s the alternative? What to do instead?

As a personal recommendation, Shan advises people to eat more green vegetables such as broccoli and spinach, instead of drinking chlorophyll. Simple as that. Remember that your diet plays a big role in determining your skin health.
